Hard Work, Critique & Time

Since the first time I did drag in 2009 I have performed no more than 20 times, but never have I learned more about my performance style than in the last 2 months...

The first thing that I have learned is that the art of performance as a drag queen involves a lot of hard work to prepare for. Whether it is mixing together the audio for a performance or figuring out exactly what to wear the day of, it is a handful. There is nothing worse than not knowing what you are going to be performing the day of a show because there is NO WAY to be polished enough to impress the audience.

Second thing, you can't be afraid to ask for and listen to critique from others- friends, other queens, or even people you don't know. It's the best way to learn and get better. Critique isn't meant to hurt anyones feelings, it's meant to be taken as a helpful suggestion to better yourself. I love criticism just as much as I love praise, so please don't be afraid to tell me what's up! One word of advice for new queens- try not to have more than one or two drinks maximum before hitting the stage (I've learned that lesson :-b).

Finally, there's no denying that drag takes so much time! I was very careful over the month of January to plan my time out well enough to be able to do all the work for my winter class at SJSU and still be able to perform in my two monthly shows. It has really helped with my time management skill though, that's for sure!
